These folks make some of the finest merino gear anywhere in the world on old looms that create smooth fabrics with amazing hand-feel and weight.

Even better is the pricing - Icebreaker make their gear in Asia on Asian looms in random places and charge through the roof. Here the tees were AUD$50-70 each depending on the gsm weight of the fabric. Unbelievable value. I bought 5 and will probably head back for more.

I think Ktena produces fabrics and clothing on par with the finest artisan Japanese and European mills and fabricants. Amazed that the brand isn’t more well known. If this was Berlin, there’d be a 8 week waitlist.

If you love high-end wool fabrics done by true artisans, you need to drop in and have a look. It’s a very modest storefront which belies the highest quality merino tops I’ve come across in years.

Apparently, they have a loop wheel loom and it’s a shame more of the tees aren’t made on it - those looms are extremely rare and if you’ve ever tried to buy a Merz B Schwanen tee, you’ll know how rare/pricey those tees are. There were some loop wheel tees left in the bargain tray but none that fit me, sadly.

A true gem of Melbourne and throwback to the great era of Australian manufacturing.

Bought a couple of long sleeved Spencer’s -Thermo Fleece® – Ladies Long Sleeve – Lace Motif – Rich Merino. They are really warm and the lace adds a nice touch. Highly recommend these.

I bought the Merino skins for thermals as I've been freezing lately and these are so soft and thick!! I didn't expect them to be as thick as they were as usual thermals I've felt were thin. I'm super happy with this purchase and love that it's 100% wool too. Very affordable! Thank you.

This company manufacturers Australian merino wool in thermal wear on their premises in Oakleigh and sells direct to the public.
I have been using these thermal tops for years and highly recommend the product for warmth and quality during those cold days.
There are many styles and colours available for women and men.
They even have merino wool socks to keep your feet warm.
You can order on line or visit the outlet for a cheaper price.

If you’re looking for the nicest softest most comfortable and fuzzy feeling thermals look no further. The quality is exemplary, the service accommodating and all at reasonable prices. And the best part Made in Australia. As a bricklayer for many years, let me tell you those winter mornings out on the Western lowlands are freezing, but whack on a woolen singlet and a woolen T-shirt and alls you need is a shirt. Keeps you comfortable all day, to concentrate on throwing down those bricks. And on warmer weather the comfort keeps on coming. Never going back to my Bonds Chesty singlets!!!

It took me far too long to find genuinely high-quality merino thermals, but I finally stumbled across Ktena — and I’m so glad I did. I bought three pairs of their merino skins and I’m absolutely blown away by the quality and the affordable price.

This is a premium product that easily outperforms the big-name brands like Macpac and Kathmandu, who usually sell poly-blend materials at outrageous prices. Ktena’s thermals are the real deal, and genuinely unmatched. Highly recommend.

My first order with Ktena and it won't be my last. The products I ordered - merino boxers and a merino long sleeve top are so comfy. I also sent a query about my order and received a very prompt and helpful reply. Very good customer service, which is a rare thing in 2025.

I bought two sets of merino long sleeves and long johns online. The first time, one set was missing, and the second time, the sizes were wrong. This initially made me feel that the shopping experience was very bad. However, fortunately, they corrected their mistake in a timely manner. Overall, this is the kind of attitude that should be expected, and I appreciate their prompt remedy.

I ordered a couple of base layer Merino skins from Ktena Knitting, and I received these today, on-time and well packaged.
I am pleasantly surprised by the excellent quality, feel and fit of the skins, just perfect for my cycling needs in the winter months.
The quality is far superior to base layer merino wool garments I bought from AliExpress, and the price is not much higher.
Well done Ktena Mills.

My wife and I went to Ktena in Oakleigh on Saturday with thoughts
of purchasing a couple of their woollen thermal products.
We met Denise on arrival who gave us fantastic service and went out of her way to make sure all the products fitted our needs perfectly.
The quality and feel of the Merino thermals was excellent and are all made on site by an Australian owned company.
We found the pricing to be very reasonable for the products offered and even better if you can purchase direct at the factory.
Instead of purchasing a couple of items we later left the premises with 21 items of Merino wool thermals with big smiles on our faces.
I would thoroughly recommend Ktena for all your under garment thermal needs with the quality and service they provide being exceptional in a very friendly environment.

Denise is very kind and generous with her time to wait for me before after their closing time. I dropped by last minute to pick up some essentials wool wears to brace the cold autumn weather and coming Melbourne’s winter 🥶She kindly assisted me like a helpful mama bear with what I need and desire. Also help me to pick out winter running base and layering. Love the variety they have! There are heaps of second grade items - half price of those items to pick from if you don’t mind mending little holes. Also discovered they make wool base for our police force! I am super happy to have found this family own company, cherry on top with Denise good-old-fashion-personalized-excellent-service!!! Happy customer here as it’s wholesale price!! This shop is amazing! We planned a special trip to Melbourne while we were in Australia just to check it out. They did not disappoint. Really great quality thermals at reasonable prices. Lots of patience as we looked at everything and tried to find the right size and very friendly. Would highly recommend we almost bought every different item in our size. Come check this out if you’re in need of wool clothes. Top notch!

I cannot recommend this shop strongly enough. My partner has had mixed luck buying merino thermals online, so we wanted to buy local from a brick and mortar shop to get a feel for quality before buying. As soon as you touch the thermals, feel the weight, look at the stitching, you can tell it's a cut above.

Denise chatted about the brand, which is named after the founder's village in Greece where he came to Australia from. Still the same family business, doing the same thing, decades on. Not chasing trends, not offshoring, just masterfully doing the same merino thermals. She offered to walk us through the factory on site, and showed us how they receive merino yarn, weave it into fabric, and cut and sew it into thermals, all right there in Oakleigh. You could feel the pride in what they do, 100% Aussie made, Aussie wool, good working conditions, fully transparent, great quality stuff.

We were only coming to investigate, but my partner left with 5 things and I snagged something for myself too. All great stuff. Note, there is a significant discount for buying at the factory shop, but even the online prices are great value for what you're getting.

(Note. I will set a reminder to update this review in one year from today to see how they hold up after a winter of frequent wear. I'm sure they will, based on the workmanship and how they feel, but I will add the one year testimonial in April 2025).

I took mom and dad to visit Ktena factory outlet, they only wear pure wool thermal underwear. The location of the store is very convenient whether driving or taking public transportation. Denise is very professional and knowledgeable about the products. We were pleased with Ktena’s high quality, super soft merino thermal fleece, and bought 11 items, absolutely great value for money. I came back to exchange an item which was too small, Denise was so nice, I greatly appreciate her excellent customer service. Highly recommend Ktena Thermal Fleece!!

Hubby & I bought between us both, 8 thermal skins items as we're soon travelling to the Northern hemisphere for Winter.
Just beautiful. Such nice, well knitted & very smooth & soft wool.
John"s customer service toward me has been exceptional & has exceeded my expectations. A hard working, warm, honest, empathetic & polite man.
You made my day & helped me without question or stressful fuss.
I mentioned we are soon travelling overseas & John was very helpful & very quick in responding to my needs.
I had to ring & arrange to receive smaller sizes for my thermal skin tops & John was happy to arrange immediate delivery. I hadn't even yet returned the other tops, but this wasn't an issue to John!
I received my small sizes within 24 hours & I was beyond pleased with the speedy service.
I will have to send back my other tops, as I stated I would, but thus far, John hasn't pressured me to return it immediately, but I certainly will do very soon.
I honestly couldn't believe it & was taken aback by his kindness & superior customer service.
I will definitely continue to support this great Aussie business in my own backyard.
I highly recommend Ktena.

I made a bunch of purchases for my Mt. Everest Base Camp hike, and I have to say, they were the best buys I've ever made.

Marino Base Layers - Not only did they keep me warm in the freezing cold, but they kept me dry even when I was sweating buckets. They really saved the day!

And the best part? After over 10 days of non-stop hiking without a decent shower, those Marino wool layers didn't pick up a funky smell. It's like they're resistant to odors, which is a lifesaver on an extended trek like this.

What really surprised me was how these layers significantly lightened my load with less clothing. When every ounce of weight counts, it's fantastic to have gear that pulls its weight – or should I say, lightens the weight.

I'm so smitten with these items that I'm not just keeping them to myself. I'm telling all my family and friends about these absolute game-changers.

This must be a well kept secret as I never knew of its existence until I was searching online for quality merino clothing and happened to land on the site. I decided to drive over and check it out, and bought several items on my first visit.

I was quite amazed at the exceptional standard of service - when I commented that the Merino Skins half zip front I was looking at would have been ideal being a tiny bit shorter in the body and sleeves, the lady (I assume she's the owner?) insisted in getting it custom altered for me on the spot. I was surprised that it was possible and done so quickly while I was browsing other items. Prices are very good and so is the quality.

I also bought a few Thermo Fleece items as the material is so soft, light and comfortable that I figured I'd use them for sleepwear. I loved them so much that I returned to buy more! They're so comfortable, and easy to machine wash. They didn't have my size, but I found that going up one size was actually perfect. So this place is quite a gem!

Purchased multiple items for my wife and I and are very happy with the quality and effectiveness of the products. I live 1.5 hours south of Hobart, Tasmania so thermals are a must have in winter. I must also complement the service we were provided as the lady that served us was extremely helpful, friendly, polite and went well beyond what would be expected in any establishment to provide us with what we were after. Amazing people and Products.

Cannot fault the product or the customer support team. While it was not ideal for Australia post to lose my parcel in the middle of winter, the customer support team went above and beyond to ensure it was resent and delivered. Safe to say thermals have made winter much more bearable

Thermals are of poor quality itchy and uncomfortable went back the next with the receipt which didn’t look like a regular receipt I had to ask for a receipt in the first place after my purchase. I spoke with the owner about my concerns in a civil manner the owner’s behaviour which was so uncalled for she was down right rude and obscene she displayed disgraceful behaviour I couldn’t believe it! I do not recommend this place very bad customer service poor quality items particularly poor business conduct👎🏻

I could not be happier after I recently discovering Ktena Knitting Mills on the internet. I called into their Shop/Factory and purchased a couple of pairs of Long Johns and Merino Skins.
I can confidently say without doubt, that these garments are by far the most comfortable and warmest that I have ever worn. They are all Australian made and are Excellent quality, which I believe far surpasses any imported product.

I bought a Merino Skin and Thermo Fleece set to keep me warm on a recent trip to Canada. They performed exceptionally well in the snow and the -4 degree days of skiing. They also were pretty odour resistant, and were fast to dry after a cold wash. Added bonus is that they're reasonably priced and made in Aus. Would recommend!

Ktena provided excellent service and products with prompt posting and packaging and making the gift something special. Ktena make a true, quality product. For the long johns and top, I ordered up a size from normal leggings and t-shirt sizes that I would buy, and they were a nice, snug fit. They are the Merino Wool and very soft, made very well, and highly recommended!

Warm and comfortable. 1st merino shirt lasted three years with constant use thru winter, and it's still going. Updated in 2022 with long johns for me and thermals for my wife. Ktena Knitting Mills, customer service is exemplary. My order was missing my husbands Thermo Fleece when my package arrived. I emailed them and almost immediately I had a reply, that the third item had been overlooked and that it had been packed and sent via express post with an extra garment. The products are delightful and feel warm and soft on your skin. Service like this is unheard of these days, so a big pat on the back to your company and I will not hesitate to recommend Ktena to my friends.

What I really love about Ktena is that they are Aussie owned and the goods made here in Victoria. I urge all my fellow Australians to support this company - do not buy cheap suspect rubbish from China. Oh, and that buy bona fide Aussie policy goes across the board for all goods and services. Sometime costs a bit more, but you get very good quality and you are safeguarding our kids' futures.

I highly recommend Merino wool leggings. I suffer from arthritis in both knees and find suitable pants to wear outdoors in winter - is a challenge. I purchased these wonderful leggings and could not believe the change it made! I enjoy being outside and hardly feel the stiffnessin my legs. Great product!

Very friendly staff and excellent clothing, couldn't be happier with the quality and price. I bought the 'Merino Skins' in long sleeve, crew neck (grey) which I've used now on several very cold nights on the motorcycle, works perfectly and very comfortable under the jacket. Also got a pair of "Thermo Fleece" long johns' (black) which are also excellent. Also tested these on the motorcycle and crawling around under the 4WD on cold concrete, works perfectly, very comfortable. Price is also fantastic considering it's Aussie made. 100% will be coming back for more :-).

Update: I've come back again after 3 years and can confirm the clothing here is very long lasting. A single Merino top lasted three years of abuse, and I've subsequently picked up a few more today, plus a few Merino beanies for good measure. Thank you again for supplying high quality garments 🙂

Soft and comfortable merino tops and bottoms, best I've found so far in several Australian brands, both for quality (and longevity), and price.
My original Merino Skins are several years old and still going well, no holes, soft and warm despite being worn most of winter for 5 years. They also have a great range of wool blend in a bunch of styles, plus the service in the shop is excellent. Do yourself a favour and buy a set of thermals.
